Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the views of Hasan-ı Basrî regarding the Friday prayer (Jumu‘ah) and its related conditions, to present the evidences upon which these views are based, and to determine the historical context of the relevant debates. In this way, both the character of religious thought during the Tābiʿūn period and the manner in which legal issues were addressed in that era will be better understood. The study will also examine how Hasan al-Basrī’s evaluations were received in later literature and to what extent they influenced the formation of contemporary juristic opinions. In this respect, the study is not limited to a purely historical description but also takes into account the continuity of the issue within the scholarly tradition. In Islamic society, the Friday prayer holds a special position in terms of preserving religious continuity and ensuring social cohesion. Through this weekly congregational prayer, the community gathers at a designated time; religious, moral, and social matters are conveyed through the sermon (khutbah); and thus public consciousness is kept alive. In this sense, the Friday prayer transcends being merely an individual act of worship and acquires an institutional character. Its outcomes-such as strengthening social relations, transmitting religious knowledge, and practicing faith on a shared communal basis-have made it a central element sustaining continuity within Muslim societies. The obligation of the Friday prayer is established by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and consensus (ijmāʿ), and there is no disagreement among Muslims concerning its obligatory nature. The Qur’an commands believers to leave trade when the call to prayer is made on Friday; the Prophet maintained this practice throughout his lifetime; and the Companions continued it as an integral part of the social order. Although there is agreement regarding its obligatory status, certain juristic debates have arisen concerning the conditions required for the validity of this act of worship and the scope of those conditions. Issues such as upon whom it is obligatory, under what circumstances it is valid, the essential elements of the sermon, its relationship to the noon (ẓuhr) prayer, and the spatial dimension of the prayer have been among the primary areas of disagreement among the legal schools. This situation is noteworthy in that it demonstrates the ijtihād-based nature of Islamic legal thought and the presence of interpretive diversity even in matters of worship. Within these discussions, the views of Hasan al-Basrī-one of the prominent scholars of the Tābiʿūn generation—occupy a distinctive place. His evaluations of the Friday prayer are significant both in terms of the evidences he employed and the way his opinions were perceived by later scholars. This reflects the dynamic structure of early Islamic jurisprudence and shows that diverse legal interpretations could coexist within the same period. In order to assess Hasan al-Basrî’s approach to this issue more accurately, a comparative method will be followed, taking into consideration the positions of the other legal schools.
